Rising damp
Common in all types of older property. It was not until the Public Health Act of 1876-79 that installing a damp course in domestic buildings was recommended. Usually a double layer of slate incorporated into the lower section of brickwork, these were liable to crack and fail overtime.
Later properties also have damp course problems, as poured bitumen (not always sufficient to keep rising dampness at bay) was commonly used in later years. Debris can also build up in the cavity and bridge the damp course. The main problem is the ground salts carried with rising damp. The only way to correct this, is the removal of internal plaster and the appropriate type of re-plastering to be carried out.
